5 February Letter from Mr. Kelly

Memorial of St. Agatha, Virgin and Martyr

Dear SJS Catholic School Community,

What an exciting Catholic Schools Week we have had!  Fun with family, friends, special events- we certainly are blessed in many ways at SJS.  Thanks to all the teachers and students for their willingness to participate.  Also, thanks to our CSW Committee and our Home and School who worked to make the week special.  This week is to be a celebration of who we are, and that is proudly a Catholic school.

I know it has been a long winter, and difficult at times to keep the students focused on school.  But our staff and students are still working hard, and we have high academic and behavioral expectations for our students.  Thank you for all the support you have shown the school.  Report cards go out March 19th.

We are moving towards the fourth quarter.  In fact, today is midterm in the third quarter.  Make sure you check Sycamore to see how your students are doing.  But, it is exciting to make such progress.  I can see the growth in the students both academically and behaviorally and thank you parents for your support.  We want the students to learn as much as possible before the year is over, so focus and attendance will be vital.  We also want to maintain academic rigor, so we will be continuing to challenge our students.  One of our school goals is to have addition and subtraction facts mastered (meaning the answer can be recalled very quickly) by the end of 2nd grade, and multiplication and division mastered by the end of 4th grade.  We also want students to avoid late work.  Your help will be necessary to reach these goals.  We take academics seriously and want our students to reach their full potential.

The weather conditions yesterday illustrate one of the points we have tried to make recently, that the Catholic Schools will call our own snow days, independent of what the public schools may be doing.  So, it is always best to check the local news to see if “Omaha Catholic Schools” is listed on the closed list.  This year has shown the value of in-person instruction and our central office will make that determination about safe conditions and closing schools.  Thank you for your attention and support.

Don’t forget to spread the word about our upcoming Preschool and Kindergarten Roundup on the 19th.  If you have a friend that would be a good fit at SJS have them contact the office.  And, if you have a visible location for a school yard sign just let us know and we will send one home.  Thanks for all you do.

Peace,

William Kelly
