25 February Virtual Backpack

Free Will Dress Down Day There will be a free will donation dress down day on Monday, March 7th to help Afghan refugees. We will be donating all money raised to the Refugee Empowerment Center who helps Afghan refugee families with housing and job training to start a new life in Nebraska.

Congratulations To Tristan Grove.  Tristan placed 3rd place in the VFW Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest!  He will be awarded a medal and cash for his work.  We are proud of you!

Wits Clash The competition was at Norris Middle School, and we competed against 25 teams from public and private schools. After several close games, we ended up taking 4th place overall. The team members competing that day were: Lochlann Noble, Mike Kluthe, Shelby Willis, Sarah Yiel, and Drew Hayford.

Covid Clinc  We will be hosting a vaccine/booster clinic on Friday, March 11th in our school Library from 12:00-4:00 p.m.  Bring completed form.

Covid at home tests  If you are experiencing COVID symptoms and an at home test would be beneficial, contact the office.  We have secured a limited number of tests we can distribute for free for families.  This is for any SJS family who is experiencing COVID type symptoms.

SJS Book Fair  It’s that time of year again! Our Scholastic Book Fair is just around the corner – March 11th – 18th. The Scholastic Book Fair is not only fun for our students, but it gets books into hands, allows students to experience a variety of authors and genres, and provides new books for our school library. I am typically able to purchase $1000 worth of books with proceeds from the fair. I am also able to pay for Scholastic Go and Bookflix, two databases that all students use.

The fair will be open before and after school, as well as the evening of March 15th during our annual Story Time. Remember we are mask-encouraged at SJS and should try and maintain a three-foot social distance while shopping. The fair will be spread out like it was in the fall so that we can all shop safely.

I am in need of volunteers to help make this a success.  See iVolunteer @ https://stjamesseton.ivolunteer.com/event_252

The available times are located on iVolunteer. I will need two adults before and after school (7:30 – 8:00 and 3:15 – 4:00). I would also like student volunteers (7th and 8th grade only, please) during the same times. They will help sell the trinkets as well as assist shoppers. I will train the adults on the cash registers (don’t worry – it’s really easy!).

I encourage you to volunteer if you are in need of service hours (or even if you aren’t!). It’s a fun experience and a way to meet other parents and students.

A couple of notes from Scholastic:
● The online fair runs simultaneously with the in person fair, but is slightly longer (about 14 days). Orders will be shipped directly to your home. Shipping is free for book-only orders. Our book fair website is listed below.
● Some of the advertised books (from the flier or book trailers) may not be available at the fair, though you might be able to purchase them online. Please remind your child to be prepared to choose something else just in case the book they want is not in stock.  I’m hearing mixed things about restocking during the fair.
● Be aware also that online deliveries might take longer than normal to arrive. Scholastic advised against ordering something that must be received in a timely manner (i.e. for a birthday). Just like most companies, they’re having supply chain issues.
● eWallet is a great way for your child to purchase books without you being present or sending cash. You can go to our Scholastic website Scholastic.com/bf/stjamessetonschool1 for more information on signing up for eWallet as well as other information regarding our fair.
● Please note: if you used eWallet during previous fairs and had leftover money, that money can be used during this fair. You simply have to go back into eWallet and allocate the funds for this fair. Those instructions are included in the eWallet information.

Please let me know if you have any questions (dvamosi@sjsomaha.org).
