Lunch Program Update

Dear SJS Catholic School Community,

Our Home and School hosted a special event last night for our new families.  It was a great night full of valuable information.  Thanks to our Home and School and all who volunteered your time to make the night a success.  Don’t forget to record those hours when you submit your parent participation!  New parents, we know it can be difficult to be new in a school, so if ever questions arise feel free to contact our teachers or the office.

As we reach the midpoint of the first quarter the following are some tips, based upon experience and best practice, to help students become successful in school:

1. Make clear to your child that disobedience is not an option.  Not even the best teacher can discipline a child who comes from a home not already respectful of adult authority.

2. Assign your child a fair amount of day-to-day housework.  The more responsible the child is within the family, the more responsibility the child will demonstrate at school.

3.  Always be interested in what your child is doing at school.

4.  If and when your child’s teacher reports a problem, give the teacher, not the child, the benefit of the doubt.  As a general rule teachers are more committed to bettering the welfare of children than any other class of professionals.

-I just find this to be good food for thought as we advance into the rest of the school year.

You should know that we are always looking at ways to improve at SJS School.  We have a school improvement plan that will be analyzed yearly and adjustments made to make sure your child receives the best possible Catholic education.  We will use the Terra Nova test results as one measure of how our school is progressing, as well as our STAR test data, and then make plans for the future. Thanks for all your support.

Technology is indeed amazing.  It’s interesting to think that many of the jobs our students will take on as adults aren’t even invented yet.  So we want our students to be able to think on their own and be problem solvers.  That’s one reason the Genius Hour is good for our school.  And the world of technology is ever-changing.  It can be hard for parents to stay ahead of trends and all the ways children communicate.  But we also know that students can get themselves in some difficult situations if left unsupervised.  There are several programs parents can use to monitor what their child is doing on line: The “Phone Sheriff,” and “Net Nanny” are a couple.  If you allow your student the freedom of a cell phone, these programs are an investment in peace of mind.  And we are working on a Social Media contract for our older students to sign as well that will lay out Catholic expectations for such situations.
