Lunch Program Update

I hope your Thanksgiving break was rewarding and relaxing.  We truly have much to be thankful for at SJS--dedicated teachers, wonderful students, and cooperative parents.  But we also need to express our gratitude to the two supportive parishes that make our school possible.  While your school tuition is an important piece of the financial puzzle at SJS School, without the parishes the school simply would not be possible.  So perhaps the Advent season gives you the opportunity to think about the stewardship that you are offering your church.  Both churches need your support financially, but beyond the financial piece, there are also the stewardship aspects of time and talent.  So as we continue into the winter season I encourage you to think of what else might be possible for you and your family in terms of church stewardship.  Stewardship helps you, the church, our school, and provides a great example for the children.  Thank you for all you do.

Please pray for our 2nd graders who will be having their First Confession tomorrow.  What an exciting time in the faith life of these students and families.  These sacraments provide for all of us reminders of God’s love and mercy.  Thanks to Mrs. Herbig and Ms. Grinnell, our priests, and parents for all their work in preparation for this important event.

We are indeed proud of our Catholic values, so I want to wish congratulations to the over 60 students who have received Positive Office Referrals so far this year.  This provides clear evidence we are putting our Catholic faith into action.  And, thanks to the many families who have contributed to our Food Drive this week.  The food drive provides an easy way to show your student the importance of helping others.

We need your help in spreading the word about our great school.  I know many of you like our school the size it is, but growth is necessary and vital for our success.  We had a great increase in the number of new kids this year (the most in recent years) largely due to parent referrals.  If you have a bulletin board or electronic bulletin board at your workplace, and could place an advertisement for SJS, please contact the office.  Please also contact the office if you know of a family we should invite to recruitment events.

Thanks for all who attended our SOAR Dinner last month.  It was a successful event and we’re excited about the numbers which we will share soon.  We also certainly accomplished the goal of having some fun and building community.

We generally have our Terra Nova standardized test info out by now for grades 3-8.  There was a delay on the diocese level (not SJS), and so those results are not to us yet, but should be soon.  And, speaking of the diocese, as a member of the Archdiocese of Omaha Catholic Schools, all snow days will be called from the Catholic Schools Office, not SJS, and will be posted on local news channels.

And, please don’t forget the school goal of having addition and subtraction facts mastered by the end of 2nd grade, and multiplication and division mastered by the end of fourth grade.  We may need your help to make these goals happen.

The SJS Home and School sent a survey link out this week to gather input about fundraisers.  Please take a moment to complete by December 7th.  It is difficult to give exact numbers for what tuition or dues could be as there are several unknown factors like student population and benefit increases.  So the survey is meant to just gather some basic information, to gather input, about fundraising.  Thanks for your support.

                                                                                                            Peace,

                                                                                                            William Kelly
